Everywhere you look there are different types of parking lots. The parking lot for your workplace is probably vastly different in its design and structure than is the parking lot at the shopping mall, or the parking lot for your apartment building. It is important to be aware that while parking lots may provide for convenience, there are still security risks to think about. Your safety should always be utmost in your mind- even if you need only walk a few short feet from your car into an establishment.
The design of a parking lot plays a role in the amount of crime that takes place there. A parking lot with poor visibility is likely to be a breeding ground for more crime. It is also the case that the better the escape route is for criminals, the more chance that crimes will occur at any given parking lot.
Lighting is an extremely important consideration of where you should park. Good lighting allows you to have a better view of your surroundings and it is more likely to deter would-be criminals. Never park where lighting is bad. If you feel uneasy parking somewhere then don't. Spend the extra few minutes to find parking with better lighting. Your safety and security depend upon it. Keep this rule of thumb in mind when you venture out at night- "You should always be able to see and identify someone at 100 feet." (Source: http://www.crimedoctor.com/parking.htm).
